This year's summer's movies

Saw X2 yesterday. I enjoyed it, but I didn't really think it was a good film. Just about everything about it was average. Nothing I haven't seen before. Take your average lowerbudget movie about some heroes who want to rescue someone, change those heroes into mutants with supapowaz and you've got the xmen2. My friends liked it though. And you can't help but think that you want to be like that Wolverine guy. Muscled, tuff and handsome.

Anyways, the marketed it as 'the opening film for the blockbuster summer movies'. Other Blockbusters as The Matrix and The Hulk are coming out as well, of what I think the Hulk will suk and the Matrix, well it'd better be good. Oh yes there's terminator 3 as well. DOn't really have high hopes for that either.

Really? The L.A Times gave it a really good review. However I already think this whole Marvel superhero phase has gotten old really quick. Even though Master Ang Lee is directing, and Eric Bana is the star (watch Chopper) I'm kind of in the same boat.

I'm still waiting for the Matrix [img]biggrin.gif[/img] . And Once Upon a Time in Mexico...the Mariachi is back!!!!!!!!

X-Men 2 , seeing that tonight, I don't have great expectations for it but still, I'll let you know.

Matrix: reloaded - well, the animated short thats been in front of some movies was pretty neat, and the film itself looks awsome, I can't wait to see it and I've got a good feeling it'll be just as good if not better than the original.

The Hulk - dont know much about it, but hasn't it been in development for a decade or so? Not sure about this one.

T3 - Can't wait to see it, but I get the feeling I'll be let down. The first and second movie were very dark, action thrillers, T3, from what I've seen of it, looks like another film that requires no thinking and is just an action movie without the thriller. I want to see it, but I don't think it's going to be like the original 2.

In theory, The Hulk should be the most interesting of the bunch due to Ang Lee - as long as he isn't too contrained by the money men. If so it would be his first dud.

Right, saw X2 and I enjoyed it. It was entertaining. There was nothing ground-breaking there and nothing that made me go "wow" but I came out feeling satisfied, deffinatley. What I found a bit annoying was the fact it was really just setting up X-Men 3. And it's obvious that gal that held the water back will be coming back in 3.

As for The Hulk - my lord, how awful does that look. Yes, it will probably do very well cos fans of the comic will want to see it etc, little kids might enjoy it too, but the use of CGi made me cringe in my seat. Really, I can't explain it, watch the trailer and you'll see what I mean. I was sitting in the cinema waiting for a game pad to come out so I could start playing what looked like a computer game on the screen. Bleurgh, looks **** .

Enjoyed X-men 2 loads, but there may be no 3, as none of them are contracted to do another and the company are worried about the cost of all the people. Matrix; Reloaded looks good, hopefully going to a preview of it at local cinema.

Good call on the X3 plot... In the comics, Jean Gray died and came back as a character named "Phoenix".

As for whether or not it was a good movie... lets consider the genre. Its a movie that's derived from a comic book. Conan. Superman. Batman. Spiderman. Blade. In general, all of these films were entertaining, but I wouldn't go so far as to call any of them revolutionary. How allegorical can you get with a contemporary character in a cod piece?

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the movie for what it was. However, there is one fundemental story-telling pieces that is absent in the X-Men saga. There aren't any characters that an audience member can relate to! In X-Men and X2, all of the major characters are super heroes from day 1, where as in a movie like Spiderman, the main character starts out as an average high school kid whom most of us can relate to in some degree, and THEN he inherits his powers. Something like X2 is a total escape-from-reality movie, but its very difficult to get emotionally invested in the characters.

Very true, and I think thats how people should go and see it as. It is a no brainer, but a fun one at that.

Finally, my only gripe is (and its not really a gripe) why didnt they use that metal dude to go into the secret complex? He would have been far more useful [img]wink.gif[/img]

I have to respectfully disagree here, one common theme in the X-Men universe is discrimination and racial hatred taken to extremes. I think you would be surprised how many people actually can actually relate to the X-Men because they are not accepted by humans (dominant white culture).

I don't know how many times I've seen in X-Men where a mutant has to confront family members with the fact that they have mutant powers...sounds like a gay/lesbian coming out of the closet.

Also if you go go by just the movies, Rogue is very much like Peter Parker. She is a normal kid living a good life when she discovers she has these powers.

If there is one thing that Stan Lee is good at it is allowing his audience to be able to empathize with his charecters and even in the recent films I belive his empathy has crossed over.
